The IBM zEnterprise™ System (zEnterprise) is a system that combines unprecedented innovations with the IBM gold standard of enterprise computing – the System z mainframe. The result is a workload-optimized system. A heterogeneous compute system capable of hosting many workloads integrated together, each one optimized to meet individual business goals on an IT infrastructure managed as one single entity.

A zEnterprise is an integrated hardware platform making it possible to deploy and intelligently manage workloads across mainframe and distributed technologies. New, built-in functions can extend many of IBM's leading mainframe-like governance and qualities of service even further to specialized application optimizers and select POWER7® and IBM x86 blade servers, allowing simplified operations across all these application environments.

The IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196) is designed with performance and capacity for growth and large-scale consolidation and when combined with improved security, resiliency and availability, the z196 can help to lower both risk and reduce cost. Data serving with the IBM mainframe platform helps you reduce complexity in your IT infrastructure while helping you simplify compliance and leverage your core asset – your data. The new zEnterprise Blade Center Extension (zBX) is an infrastructure hosting the optimizers and blade servers. The zBX utilizes a private high speed internal network that connects it to the z196, which reduces the need for networking gear and provides inherently high security. The zBX allows the zEnterprise to extend its strong portfolio to support AIX on Power and Linux on System x® (SOD) applications.

The IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager (zManager) provides integrated management for the zEnterprise System. It can dramatically simplify operations across the multiple application environments. The Unified Resource Manager provides energy monitoring and management, goal-oriented resource management, increased security, virtual networking, and information management, all integrated into a single easy-to-use interface.

The IBM zEnterprise System includes the z196, the zManager, the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX), and integrated optimizers and/or select IBM blades.
